ENGINEERING DEGREE APPRENTICE
Studying towards a BEng (Hons) in Applied Engineering at WMG, University of Warwick

What are the advantages of being on the apprenticeship scheme?
The Apprenticeship Scheme at Aston Martin presents you with a variety of unique opportunities, one such opportunity is allowing you to study the theory of Engineering through University or College which you can then apply first-hand back to your workplace. In addition, through the Apprenticeship Scheme you gain 4 years of work experience as you move around the business working with a myriad of different departments, each of which helping to increase your knowledge and skills in Engineering.

How has the apprenticeship scheme helped you to develop?
Before Aston Martin and before my Apprenticeship I wanted to improve both time management and communication. Through working in a professional environment, by getting involved in various projects and by collaborating with other engineers, I have seen both disciplines improve. I have been fortunate enough to teach Sixth Form students studying engineering, various tools and techniques used within Aston Martin, therefore, allowing me to put communication into practice. At Aston Martin, through the apprenticeship scheme, you will develop in knowledge, skills and behaviours that are essential for working in the automotive industry.

Would you recommend being an apprentice with Aston Martin? I would of course recommend an apprenticeship with Aston Martin as the past 4 years have been so valuable to me, giving me a real head-start in my career as an aspiring engineer. Working on a range of ultra-luxury Aston Martins will help you gain hands-on, practical experience where you learn the right skills for the job. Alongside working at Aston Martin, you’ll be studying for an Engineering qualification funded by the company, allowing you to gain a deeper knowledge of different sectors of Engineering.

Why did you choose to apply for the apprenticeship scheme?
When studying Engineering at Sixth Form, I was fortunate enough to be given a project by Aston Martin. The project was not only enjoyable but got me to think like an engineer and so from there I wanted to pursue a career in Automotive Engineering. However, there are many different areas that you can go into in Automotive Engineering, so to explore what I was best suited to I wanted to do an Apprenticeship and what better place to do that than at Aston Martin.

Is there a specific moment or achievement that stands out as a proud milestone in your journey?

Last month, I received the employee of the month award in procurement. It was a really nice reward after putting in a lot of effort and time. I am proud of myself, and it shows that hard work does pay off.

What do you think sets Aston Martin’s Apprenticeship Scheme apart from others in the industry?

I think the brand identity is one of a kind. It’s a small company compared to other major companies. I think it's more personal as a business, and I feel more valued here than I would at other places. I have been given lots of responsibility in the short time I have had here and got the sufficient support I needed to continue to develop at Aston Martin.

What made you choose Aston Martin and its Apprenticeship Scheme to start your career?

I have always been interested in luxury cars, and I knew Aston Martin was one of the most prestigious brands with a lot of history. Also, when I saw that Aston Martin came back into F1, it made me really want to get involved and extended my love for the brand even more!

Looking ahead, what do you hope to accomplish, and how does Aston Martin’s Apprenticeship Scheme support you in reaching those goals?

My long-term goal is to finish off my apprenticeship first. I would love to stay in procurement and find myself a role at Aston Martin. I got the chance to rotate to different areas of the business at Aston, and I gained exposure to other areas. I have felt supported by managers, which has been positive, and I feel I have a lot of support.

What advice would you give to students considering Aston Martin’s Apprenticeship Scheme?

Just be confident in yourself and ask questions if you are unsure. Also, networking and building connections are important, and I do this on LinkedIn.

Is there a specific moment or achievement that stands out as a proud milestone in your journey?

I would say that my proud moment working at Aston Martin is the level on involvement I get to have here. I have responsibility in my role to make decisions and influence areas. Working on the Vanquish, I’ve helped to build some of the new Vanquish and contribute to decision-making with my ideas.

What do you think sets Aston Martin’s Apprenticeship Scheme apart from others in the industry?

I think the level of involvement you get from day one. I thought when I joined the apprenticeship, it would start of being low level with not much responsibility, however I have been thrown into tasks with the necessary support and been able to be hands on. I ask questions and receive the support and have been able to make connections. Aston Martin offers lots of future of opportunities.

What made you choose Aston Martin and its Apprenticeship Scheme to start your career?

The offer was so good in terms of being a young female aspiring engineer, great opportunity to work in prestigious and company that works in putting people first. Aston has a unique manufacturing line, it’s very personalised and a smaller business here. It has a really nice, personalised customer experience unlike other places. This stood out for me hence why I chose Aston Martin as my scheme of choice.

Looking ahead, what do you hope to accomplish, and how does Aston Martin’s Apprenticeship Scheme support you in reaching those goals?

I want to develop in terms of learning as much as possible, exposure to different departments to see what I enjoy. I have the flexibility to explore other areas and network and develop across different stage of Manufacturing and Engineering, understanding full projects from start to finish and seeing all the different stages.

What advice would you give to students considering Aston Martin’s Apprenticeship Scheme?

I would say to take the opportunity to learn the apprenticeship. I think working here does help to open a lot of doors for future opportunities. You can develop skills and confidence. It’s also given me the chance to have a proper insight into what a working environment is like.

Is there a specific moment or achievement that stands out as a proud milestone in your journey?

I have had a few opportunities. I did a video with Laura Trott for National Apprenticeship Week and got to visit Parliament and meet some of the MPS. It gave me a good opportunity to network and meet people. I am currently working on Valhalla, which has been enjoyable. I have also had the chance to go out and visit schools in the local area and chat with other people of similar age about my experience here at Aston.

What do you think sets Aston Martin’s Apprenticeship Scheme apart from others in the industry?

Aston Martin is an ultra-luxury brand. It has so much history behind it, with James Bond behind it. Working at other companies, they might not have as much history with the brand, so that is important to me.  In terms of employees, Aston is a small company, so it makes the brand feel more personable. I find there is not a huge gap between senior management and myself, making it feel like a close and personal place to work.

What made you choose Aston Martin and its Apprenticeship Scheme to start your career?

The Brand has an amazing history behind it, and I was drawn to it. I think having the chance to work with cool supercars and get exposure to different areas of the business to see how it all works is exciting. With lots of projects coming up and launching in the next few years, seeing this unfold makes Aston Martin a cool workplace. It’s an exciting time to join the Brand.

Looking ahead, what do you hope to accomplish, and how does Aston Martin’s Apprenticeship Scheme support you in reaching those goals?

After my apprenticeship, I’d like to stay at Aston. I wouldn’t want to leave, and I love my team. I want to continue my work in procurement, progress through the ranks, better myself, and keep working on my skills. I would like to one day become Chief Procurement Officer, potentially in 30/40 years for Aston Martin.

What advice would you give to students considering Aston Martin’s Apprenticeship Program?

Apply and do it! It’s a great place to start learning and on the job, too, while also getting a degree! I’d also say to students to keep an open mind when applying. As you learn on the job, go with it, be passionate about learning, and ask questions. I didn’t know what procurement was at first, and now I’m really enjoying it.

Is there a specific moment or achievement that stands out as a proud milestone in your journey?

I get to work on cool projects. My first day was one of the most rewarding days if I am honest! I had the feeling that I made it. I had a tough time before I came to Aston Martin in terms of my career, and it took a lot to get here! I was so pleased. It is something I am very grateful for at this age, but at the end of the day, the fact that you have this role is so impressive and something to be proud of.

What do you think sets Aston Martin’s Apprenticeship Scheme apart from others in the industry?

From a personal view, I am into automotive and cars, and to work here was something another firm couldn’t do. I wanted to get into something I was passionate about, automotive, offering Aston Martin such a prestigious history and something that you can’t compete with in terms of the opportunity that it gives me. I got the chance to attend an NEC exhibition and talk to other young people on the team. I had a factory tour of the F1 team and other opportunities outside of the working environment.  I think the limited number of slots makes it feel very exclusive and harder to get into Aston, but when you do get in, it makes it very special and rewarding

What made you choose Aston Martin and its Apprenticeship Scheme to start your career?"

I was doing something similar in my previous role, and by chance, I saw the opportunity on LinkedIn. I had been turned away by other companies, but then I realised what I was passionate about. I always thought to take a gap year. It helped me realise what I wanted to do, and I realised that the idea of doing full-time work alongside a degree worked really well for me.

Looking ahead, what do you hope to accomplish, and how does Aston Martin’s Apprenticeship Scheme support you in reaching those goals?

I hope to get a first-class degree at University. Aston Martin is great at supporting me, and I get 1 day off a week to go to Uni. I get dedicated time to work to make sure I have dedicated time to do my studies by my manager. This really helps me manage my time and helps not to overwhelm me. Being able to ask people around the office questions is great. I think in the long term, I would like to have more responsibility in my role and a chance to rotate on the apprenticeship.

What advice would you give to students considering Aston Martin’s Apprenticeship Scheme?

It can be daunting at first, but it's so worth it! It's great to gain experience and develop skills on the job. I have met some of my lifelong friends here, and I don’t feel like I have missed out on anything.
